Flight Schools at risk as Jet Fuel prices remain high

The Aviation Industry Association of New Zealand is warning that New Zealand risks losing flight schools as jet fuel prices remain at historically high levels, placing significant financial pressure on training providers.

Speaking on Newstalk ZB, AIANZ Chief Executive Simon Wallace said government‑funded tertiary aviation training organisations face particular challenges, as annual limits on student fee increases prevent fuel cost rises from being passed on to students.

“Flight schools need to be financially viable to continue operating,” Wallace said. “With fuel costs so high, some providers may simply not be able to continue unless there is some form of government assistance.”

The Tertiary Education Commission has confirmed that any requests to increase fees can only be considered for the next academic year, with fee increases capped at six percent this year—well below the rise in aviation fuel prices.

Associate Energy Minister Shane Jones has indicated the Government is considering whether intervention may be required in the jet fuel market.

AIANZ continues to engage with government agencies to highlight the critical role flight schools play in developing New Zealand’s aviation workforce and the need for timely solutions to ensure their sustainability.
